EECS 159A / CSE 181A offered in spring 2017

Dear EECS and CSE students:

This is an announcement for EECS 159A / CSE 181A (Senior Design Projects I) in Spring 2017.

If you have reached senior standing (135 units), then you can take it, assuming you have the prerequisites (EECS 113 or CSE 145).  You can get approved by taking them at the same time as EECS 159A / CSE 181A.

Background:

  • CSE 181A, cross listed as EECS 159A, used to be offered in Fall quarter only, but a recent change made it possible to be offered multiple times a year.  This will hopefully give you more flexibility in planning your graduation.

Why take it Spring 2017:

  • Online format: you will not need to attend the large lecture each week; instead, you will be able to view the recorded lectures from Fall 2016 at the time of your convenience.  Embedded questions will test your understanding.  So, we think it is a better way to learn.
  • Flexibility:  You have the option of taking Senior Projects II in the summer or in the fall.  This can give you more time and less time pressure to work on your projects.

How to sign up:

  • First, you need to form a team of 3-4 students.  Your team mates can be EECS or CSE students.  Once you have a team, elect a team captain as the contact person.  You may use http://srproj.eecs.uci.edu/ for more information and project ideas.
  • Second, talk to faculty to get them to be your team’s mentor.   Some faculty are not very good at replying to email, so you should talk to them in person, knock on their doors, follow them to lectures etc.
  • Third, once the faculty has agreed to be your mentor, ask them for authorization code (from their websoc account) so you can enroll in their LAB section under their name.  If such a lab section does not exist, one can be created by sending requests through Prof. Pai Chou (phchou@uci.edu)
  • Fourth, complete your enrollment by signing up for both the lecture and lab sections (using the authorization code)

For further questions please contact Prof Pai Chou (phchou@uci.edu)
