About the EECS Portal

Purposes

The EECS Portal is a website for facilitating internal communication between members of the EECS Department, including faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and even visitors.  It is designed to serve the following purposes, which have been sorely missing

  • Time-sensitive posts in the form of calendar of events, including talks, meetings, social events, orientations, etc
  • News and announcements (coming soon)
  • Directory of administrative and academic procedures and forms
  • Directory of all sorts of facts, trivia, Q&A about the department
  • On-line forums for different groups to carry out discussions

Technology

The EECS Portal is implemented using Drupal 7, a content management system.   It supports authentication using UCInetID, although users must be added explicitly by an administrator.  It also can configure users with different roles, One such role is viewer without authentication, but they will have no authoring rights. Authenticated users can have additional rights including participating in forums, post comments, and authoring some pages, but not making structural changes.

Related Sites

There are actually several related websites:

  • EECS website under Engineering (http://www.eng.uci.edu/dept/eecs/):
    • the Dean's office has full editorial control over that site, which serves external relations purposes.  However, it is not suitable for many topics that are mainly of internal interest, whether they are confidential.  This site replaced the department-administered www.ece.uci.edu site (created by Pai Chou in 1999) during former Dean N. Alexopoulos's administration around 2004.  The old site can no longer be accessed, but many faculty's personal websites can still be found at www.ece.uci.edu/~user or newport.eecs.uci.edu/~user addresses running on the original server.
  • EECS Intranet (http://intranet.eecs.uci.edu/)
    • This is a restricted website whose access is limited to EECS faculty and staff.  When you see "Access Denied", faculty and staff users just need to click on Login using UCInetID to gain access.  All EECS faculty can post content on this website.  Access-limited documents will remain on this site and will not be migrated over to this portal.  The Intranet site was created by Pai Chou when Mike Green first became chair in 2009.
  • CSE website (http://www.cse.uci.edu/)
    • This is a student-mainted, faculty-supervised site to facilitate communication among the students, faculty, and counselors of the CSE program.  This site was proposed by Pai Chou and approved by the CSE steering committee in AY 2015-6 to facilitate communication among CSE students, staff, and faculty affiliated with the CSE program.  The first student volunteer to work on this site is Navninder Yadev taking it as a CSE 199 under supervision of Pai Chou.
  • Senior Projects website -- work in progress.
    • This site is meant to be a year-round, ongoing site for showcasing past projects, posting current project ideas by both faculty and students, facilitating team formation, and helping students and faculty to match up with each other.  It will be for CpE, CSE, and EE undergrads.
