Setup for Newbie

This page contains information for people who are new to UCI to set up their Internet connection.

Wi-Fi Access

The UCI campus is covered by the Wi-Fi network named "UCI Mobile Access".  You must register your device before you can get online.  Note that Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications are not allowed over the wireless network.

  • Visitors can register themselves for temporary access to UCI Mobile Access.  The restrictions are 24 hours at a time, and no more than 7 times in a 30-day period.  Also, the access is restricted to web (HTTP, HTTPS), email (IMAP, SMTP), and secure shell (SSH).
  • For longer visitor access, a UCI faculty, staff, or graduate student may also register a sponsored guest for up to 4 weeks by manual registration.
  • UCI people should register the MAC address of their Wi-Fi or Ethernet devices using their UCInetID.

UCInetID

UCInetID is your online ID for accessing online resources at UCI.  It consists of a unique user name, and you authenticate yourself with a password.  It can be activated by faculty, staff, students, sponsored IDs, groups, retirees, student applicants, and alumni.

Once activated, it can give you access to

EECS Unix Account

EECS has contracted Distributed Computing Service (DCS) to maintain a set of Unix servers for instructional use (e.g. programming, EDA tools, etc).  You can also publish your personal web page at http://www.ece.uci.edu/~yourUserName/ (also, http://newport.eecs.uci.edu/~yourUserName/) by putting HTML files in your public_html directory on the server.

You do not automatically have an account on the servers, but these accounts need to be created separately and are unrelated to your UCInetID.

Faculty can request accounts by emailing DCS (dcs@uci.edu) with their own UCInetID or the students' UCInetIDs from their course roster.  DCS will create accounts accordingly.  By default, their user name will be the same as their UCInetID, but not always.  It is possible that a different user name be assigned either by request or due to conflict.  Also, DCS can create accounts even without a UCInetID.

UCI Google Account

The department is increasingly relying on UCI-managed Google tool suite for its administrative functions, so it is important especially for faculty to set up their UCI Google accounts properly.
