EECS support/server updates

From: Michael Green

Dear Colleagues,

I’d like to inform you of some changes regarding the EECS servers:

Support staff:

Duncan Phillips has retired from UCI.  The OIT professionals supporting our department are now Clint Anderson (cfanders@uci.edu) and Kyle Kurr (kkurr@uci.edu), both of whom report to Francisco Lopez.

Faculty should send support requests directly to eus@uci.edu, with cc to cfanders@uci.edu and to kkurr@uci.edu.

Students (both research and classes) should send support requests to oit@uci.edu.  Please let your students know about these changes.

Backups/Licenses:

By next week all of our files on the EECS machines will have been migrated to a NetApp appliance.  Also, all of the various software licenses have been moved to a virtual server.  These changes should greatly enhance reliability of our data.

New servers:

The department has purchased two new Linux servers, named “bondi” and “laguna.”  I’ll let you know once they are available for use.  This will make a total of 5 Linux servers (zuma, crystalcove, ladera, bondi, laguna) and 1 Solaris (vivian).

The solaris machine will remain running through the end of the Fall quarter, after which it will be salvaged.  This would be a good time to verify that all of the software that you need has versions that can run on Linux rather than Solaris.

A number of EECS faculty still have web pages running on the virtual newport.eecs.uci.edudomain.  This will continue to be supported.

-Mike
